Crazy Pandas on Tour – Charing Cross Road, Greenwich, Charring Cross, 10/5/14

Well today has been fun!  After getting up in order to catch the 7.11 train from Coventry to Euston, we found ourselves at the Montagu Pyke on Charring Cross Road which, being a Wetherspoons pub, we knew would be the right place to go for a slap up breakfast.  Unfortunately, unlike the ‘Spoons in Coventry which start serving alcohol at 8 am, we were an hour too early to have a beer with our breakfast (they don’t serve alcohol until 10 am) and so MJ had to settle for a triple espresso mocha with his large breakfast, while AR happily settled for some orange juice.  As one would expect with ‘Spoons, the food was lovely and we were soon fuelled up for a long day in the Capital.  Our first outing?  The W H Smiths on Oxford Street to pick up today’s free Lego set with the Daily Fail (one of MJ’s other obsessions…).  After this it was happily later than 10 o’clock, so it was back to the Montagu pyke (which originated as a cinema in the early 20th century, and has seen performances by the likes of Kiss and The Who in its second incarnation as a club in the 1980s) where half pints of Wychwood beers Pile Driver (in honour of Status Quo) and Full Brazilian (their World Cup brew) as well as Adnams Explorer were bought, and AR chose the Full Brazilian as her favourite while MJ polished off the other two.

After this we headed to the Cutty Sark in Greenwich, where  MJ was happy to find a pint of London Pale Ale by Greenwich Meantime, while AR was equally happy to get a cup of tea and some soup.  We then went to see the hilarious Avenue Q at the Greenwich Theatre before making our way back towards Euston.  En route we chanced upon our first new discovery of the day in the shape of The Beer House at Charring Cross Station, which had a couple of guest ales as well as a few keg beers from Meantime, of which we decided to share a Union Lager as we were passing through.  We then headed North and found a pub that was new to us that looked very inviting in our copy of London Pub Walks; The Porterhouse.  This pub is an outpost of the Porterhouse Brewing Company in Dublin, and MJ enjoyed their very nice Plain Porter while AR went for the Mortimer Orchard cider by Westons.  After this we walked on and discovered a fantastic brand new pub, which will have its own dedicated blog entry to follow, before arriving back at Euston just in time to catch our train back to Coventry (but too late to have a drink at the Euston Tap, which will no doubt appear in a future review), on which we enjoyed a bottle of their rather refreshing Tilting Ale each, which makes an extremely pleasant addition to any Virgin Trains journey =)
